Creating a meaningful care package

Updated: Jan 27

Care packages have a long-standing reputation as love-filled vessels that sail across seas, time-zones, and the busy streets of our own towns, carrying the simplest items which magically transform into smile-makers. There's just something about receiving a package hand-stitched with thoughtfulness and love, especially when it’s least expected.

When we create a care package, it’s not just about shoving a bunch of stuff in a box. It’s about sneaking in a bit of our heart, layering it with a dab of humor, a pinch of wisdom, a sprinkle of comfort, and a whole lot of love!

You might wonder: "Why go through the effort of individually picking things, packing them prettily, and adding lovingly sarcastic notes like “caffeine to crank up your crankiness”? It’s because the time that it takes is an important part of the gift. Inside the package, the person won’t just find items, they’ll find ‘you.’ It makes the recipient feel seen, understood, and held dear – feelings that, let’s be honest, we all crave.

Here is how I create a meaningful care package.

Step 1: Consider the recipient

Think about the recipient's preferences, needs, and current circumstances. Tailor the care package to their personality and the occasion or situation for which you are creating it.

Step 2: Choose relevant items

Pick a variety of items that will bring joy, comfort, entertainment, practical assistance and support to the recipient. Include goodies that are a mix of instant smiles (think tasty treats) and longevity (think books, comfort items).

Step 3: Add a personal touch

Adding a personal item or two can make the care package extra special. Think along the lines of photos of shared experiences, favorite books, homemade baked goodies, artwork, etc.

Step 4: Write meaningful messages

Write a short but meaningful note explaining why you chose each item, or how it reminds you of the person and one of their good qualities. Attach these notes to the respective items (via stickers/labels, post-its, or gift tags) to let the receiver know you've truly thought about them.

Step 5: Select a suitable container

Choose a sturdy and appropriately-sized basket or gift box that is large enough to hold all of the items. You can find these containers at craft stores or online retailers. Or you can repurpose a box or basket you already have. The container itself can be part of the gift, something the recipient can reuse and enjoy.

Step 6: Pack thoughtfully

You want the recipient to be able to see and enjoy each item as they open the care package, so arrange and layer the items carefully, like Tetris. You can put heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top. Tissue paper and crinkle shreds can add an extra pop of color and fun.

Step 7: Add a final note or card

Include a “Why I did this” note or card – the cherry on top! "Because you've been doing it tough lately!" "Because you're awesome!" "Because you deserve a box full of joy!" "Because your hard work and dedication has note gone unnoticed!"

Step 8: Seal and deliver

Finally, decorate (think wrapping paper, cellophane, ribbons, etc), then either hand-deliver or ship the package.

Care packages are like walking sunshine on a dull day, reassurance and comfort during stressful and difficult times, or simply cherry-toppers on the cake of already joyous and celebratory occasions. Irrespective of its size, cost, or whether it arrives through mail or at the doorstep, a care package can be an effective piece of magic that spreads warmth, joy, and cheer.

When was the last time you gifted a care package? – And what was the response?

What do you love to find in a surprise care package?

Can you recall the best care package that landed on your doorstep? What was the circumstance and how did it make you feel?

I’d love to hear some of your thoughts and experiences.
